Volkswagen has announced that the Touareg, its long-running premium SUV, will reach the end of production in 2027, closing a major chapter in the German automaker’s history. Since its global debut in 2002, the Touareg has stood as one of Volkswagen’s most successful and technologically advanced SUVs.
Introduced alongside the luxurious Volkswagen Phaeton sedan, the Touareg was the brand’s first serious venture into the premium SUV and off-road market. Over the course of three generations, more than 1.2 million units have been sold worldwide — a record that underscores the model’s enduring popularity and success.
To commemorate the end of production, Volkswagen will release a special Touareg Final Edition, featuring exclusive exterior and interior details. Each vehicle will include “FINAL EDITION” laser-engraved door sills and embossed leather gear knobs, symbolizing the SUV’s prestigious legacy.
Multi-color ambient lighting will come as standard on the Black Edition trim and higher variants. The illuminated dashboard trim and door sill moldings will further distinguish the Final Edition from previous models, blending sophistication with subtle performance-oriented design cues.
The first-generation Touareg, launched in 2002, received widespread acclaim for its combination of luxury, comfort, and off-road capability. It went on to sell 471,000 units before its production run ended in 2009.
The second-generation model continued the momentum from 2010 to 2018, selling 483,000 units, including hybrid variants that helped Volkswagen establish a presence in the emerging eco-luxury SUV segment.
With the third generation focusing on advanced technology and plug-in hybrid efficiency, the Touareg evolved from a rugged luxury SUV into a symbol of Volkswagen’s engineering excellence.
