Good news is coming for fans of double-cab pickups, especially loyal devotees of the Toyota Hilux. In the coming months, Toyota is reportedly ready to launch the newest generation of the Hilux, bringing a series of important and significant updates. This launch is predicted to be a major highlight in the light commercial vehicle segment.

According to circulating reports, Toyota plans to officially introduce the 2026 model year Hilux at the prestigious Thailand Motor Expo. The exhibition is scheduled to take place from November 28 to December 10, 2025.

The launch of the legendary pickup will occur in the middle of the exhibition, marking its global debut.

The information circulating, supported by leaked photos and images, reveals a number of design changes that make the look of the new-generation Hilux even more robust and modern. One of the most striking changes is seen on the front fascia of the vehicle.

The front grille now appears more upright and muscular, giving it a characteristic tough impression.

The headlights are designed to be sleeker and more modern, aligning with global design trends. Both light clusters are now connected by a horizontal LED light bar, creating a wide and futuristic look.

The rear of the pickup truck has also received a refresh. There are visible wheel arches that are now square-shaped. This area is expected to be wrapped in thick black plastic cladding, adding to the rugged off-road impression.

Despite receiving many new touches on the exterior, Toyota is reportedly maintaining some key elements of the Hilux. The central part of the pickup, as well as the IMV ladder frame chassis, will be retained.

This decision is interesting, considering that newer Toyota models in similar segments, such as the latest Land Cruiser and the Toyota Tacoma in America, have switched to the TNGA-F platform.

The continuity of the IMV chassis shows Toyota wants to maintain the Hilux’s proven strong and reliable fundamental character.

From a technology standpoint, the 2026 Hilux is expected to adopt an electric power steering (EPS) system. The use of EPS is not solely aimed at improving fuel efficiency.

The integration of this electric power steering system also paves a smoother path for the application of more advanced Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems (ADAS) technology. Safety and driver assistance features will certainly be an important selling point.

Previously, Toyota had begun the electrification of the 2.8-liter four-cylinder diesel engine, which produces 201 hp (204 PS) of power, by adding 48-volt mild-hybrid technology. This step reaffirms their commitment to electrification.

The latest reports even mention the strong possibility of a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) variant arriving in 2026. This would provide a more environmentally friendly option with limited pure electric driving capability.

There is also speculation circulating about a high-performance GR version of the Hilux. This performance-oriented variant would likely utilize the i-Force Max 2.4-liter hybrid engine. This engine is sourced from the Toyota Tacoma and is claimed to be capable of delivering up to 326 hp (330 PS) and 630 Nm of torque.

In addition to hybrid options, Toyota has also strongly signaled plans to introduce a full electric (full electric/BEV) variant of the Hilux. This plan is expected to materialize before the end of 2025.

This is an ambitious move that will place the Hilux at the forefront of global electric pickup competition.

Important changes are not only happening to the exterior and engine. Patent filings for the ninth generation Hilux further confirm the visual changes revealed in the road test photos.

Aside from the external appearance, the patent documents also feature new amenities that will adorn the cabin interior. Among them is the instrument panel, which is now fully digital.

The infotainment system also receives an upgrade with a touchscreen system designed in a tablet style. These changes will make the experience behind the wheel feel much fresher, more modern, and informative.

Overall, these major updates ensure that the new-generation Hilux retains its fundamental character as a tough pickup. However, with the integration of hybrid and ADAS technology, and a more appealing design, this vehicle is ready to face market challenges in 2026 and beyond.

The Hilux is not just being updated; it is being prepared for the era of electrification.
